Volume 12 of The Examined Life Journal is now available!

The Examined Life Journal is a literary publication of The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine published annually by The Writing and Humanities Program at the Carver College of Medicine. The Journal is a forum devoted to literary prose and poetry which intends to deepen and complicate our understanding of healthcare, healing, illness, the human body, and the human condition. Working at the intersection of science, medicine, policy, and the literary arts, The Examined Life Journal recognizes that the practice of medicine and the practice of being a patient are filled with ambiguity and contradiction and that each medical encounter is fundamentally a human encounter. The publication includes original works of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry that explore the complexity of these journeys.
